The Curatorial Plan of the 2004 Pingyao International Photography Festival
Featuring the theme of “Civilization and Development”, the 2004 Pingyao International Photography Festival (PIP) will create a rich and strong cultural climate where there are dynamic interactions between the local and the global, between individuality and commonness, reflecting openness and diversity. With an emphasis on finding and promoting new artists and new work, it will give prominence to new concepts, new perceptions, new skills and more variety in art, providing simultaneous display of both artistic and documentary photography. Additionally, the festival will arrange traveling photo exhibitions of well-recognized photographers, domestic and international, at Pingyao to add more internationality, authority and taste to the 2004 Pingyao International Photography Festival.

2. Photo Exhibitions of the 2004 Pingyao International Photography Festival
The 2004 Pingyao International Photography Festival will show over 100 exhibitions displaying 5600 or so pictures by 327 photographers hailing from a score countries and regions, as well as from 20 provinces and municipalities in the country, within 8 exhibition zones.
There will be a distinctively-themed exhibition in each zone so that viewers can get a good grasp on the different subjects and styles displayed.

This zone will be the major exhibiting space for works of domestic and international photographers’ works curated by Chinese and foreign professionals. Chiefly among them are works by Rene Burri, a well-known master photographer in the world; by Yoshihoro Tatsuki, a famous Japanese photographer; Noel Quidu, a famed French battlefield photographer; and the exhibition of ten German photographers entitled “Looking and Thinking” curated by Wang Xiaohui, a Chinese artist residing in Germany.
